Hi everyone, welcome to my first post and thanks for spending your time to read my post. First of all, let me briefly introduce myself so that you guys know who I am. My name is Hii Siew Yuen with matrix number 66123. I am a first-year UNIMAS student which taking counselling under the Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development. I came from Sarikei, Sarawak. Sarikei is a small town located on the Rajang River, near to the river empties into the South China Sea. It is well-known because of its sweet and juicy pineapple production. Thus, the town is also called as “pineapple town” and the “food basket of Sarawak”.
Once I get knew my UPU result, I am offered with the program counselling in UNIMAS. My heart suddenly sank and felt depressed. Counselling is my 7th choice out of 12. I’m really not interested in counselling courses. I know, be a counsellor must good in communication and capable to deal the problems with the clients. But, I am the kind of person that very quiet and seldom talk with others since I am small. So, I don’t have the confidence that I can be a good counsellor in the future. It is a big challenge for me to make new friends and communicate with others in university life. It is hard for me to adapt myself in a new environment. I worried that I can’t make a new friend and scared to be alone. Thankfully, I had made some new friends. They are very precious to me and very friendly to me.
Now, I would like to share with guys about my experience with the basic helping skills class during the first week. In the beginning, I feel very nervous and worried actually. This is due to I don’t know who is going to teach us and the lecturer is strict or not. But when Dr Fa steps in the tutorial room, she smiles at us. I find that Dr Fa has a deep dimple on her cheeks and a very familiar Chinese’s eyes. She greets us with a kindly smile and gives us a good impression in our mind. I feel warm with Dr fa because of her humorous and gentle personalities. Before the lesson start, she asked us to state what strength do we have own. I asked myself and tried to find out what strength I have. A few minutes pass, I still don’t have the answer. I felt annoyed because I don’t like someone ask me to stand up and answer the question. So, I just simply replied, “I don’t know what my strength is… and I don’t have strength…” Dr Fa continues, “Hii, everyone has their own strength. You just didn’t realize it. Try to think for a moment before you give us an answer.” Then I think and think, I figure that my strength is honesty. I can be a good listener and help others to keep the secret. I felt very pleased and thanks for Dr Fa awakening me so that I can see my strengths.
After attending the class, I had learned about what is helping, helper, helpee, the characteristics of effective helpers and the types of helpers through the first lesson. Besides, I also had learned various helping technique and skills that are important for a counsellor to have. This is because all of those techniques and skills can help a counsellor to deal with client’s issues and help to ensure the counselling session run smoothly. Lastly, I hope I can overcome all the difficulties faced by me and keep going until achieving my goals.
That’s all for me and please look forward to my next post 😬
