Today, on this blessed Friday afternoon, I want to share with you another interesting post about the syllabus that I learnt in Dr Fa classes. In the previous post I share with you guy about my thought of Basic Helping Skills class. This post is specially made for those who want to know more about counselling and the syllabus that was taught in Degree in Counselling with Honour in UNIMAS.
Helping is a process when a person who need help and being help by someone who is able to help. While helper is someone that can assists others to understand, overcome or deal with external or internal problems. In becoming an effective helper I need to have self awareness, understanding others, sensitive towards racial, ethnic, cultural factors in self and others. Dr Fa also taught me that therapeutic relationship between counsellor and client was confined to the therapy sessions and not overflows to social relationship.

In Dr Fa class, I also learnt that there are a few unrealistic beliefs that will happen as I becoming a true and good counsellor, namely,” if the client is not motivated, it is my fault” and “if I am effective with one client, I will be effective with every client”.  As a trainee counsellor I should avoid this kind of unrealistic believe so that I will not stress out myself and I can do my job right.
SOLER was introduced by Egan, 1998. In this SOLER attending skill, I learnt that even with body language I can encourage client to speak up.
S ⇨ face client SQUARELY- means you are interested and available to work with them
O ⇨ OPEN posture- non defensive and receptive
L ⇨ LEAN towards client- to let them know that you are attentive
E ⇨ EYE contact- your interesi their concern
R ⇨ RELAX- confidence and this helpee to relas too
