My Experience in Basic Helping Skills Class

Hi Guys!!!

I would like to share my experience during Basic Helping Skills class with our beloved lecturer Dr.Fa.

I gain a lot of new information about counseling. Firstly, I got to know that counseling has skills and techniques that I have to learn in order to help others effectively. Previously, I thought that counseling is quite easy since counselors only need to listen and give advice to their clients. Now, after entering BHS class, I know that to be a counselor I have to learn theories and other skills that would be practice during the real counseling session.

Besides, I also learn that counseling does not involve a counselor to give an advice for the clients. Instead, both the counselor and client need to work together in order to solve the problems. A client has the right to make their own decision and counselor only have to provide guidance for the client.

In this class, I got to know that during counseling session, all the issues that were discussed should be kept confidential as long as it does not involve the client to harm themselves or others. During high school, I personally think that the counselor in my school does not keep the issues shared by students as private. Because of this, students were reluctant to share their problems with school counselors. Now I know that anything that was discussed during sessions is confidential.

One reason why I like to be in this class is because I get to view things in different perspective. This comes from Cognitive Behavior Therapy where I gain knowledge about how to organize our thoughts in a helpful manner. When we perceive things in an optimistic way, our behavior would become much more positive. I believed that being an optimist would make our life happier.

Hope you guys enjoy reading this!
