Experience Makes You Learn

If someone were to ask me what I remember the most about Basic Helping Skill class, I would say it is the rain! I cannot remember how many times I arrived home in soaked clothes because it always raining on Monday during the early semester. Same goes to Theory of Counseling class by Puan Aina on Friday. I even sometimes get into class with my wet socks. Thanks God it never went smelly during the classes.

Anyway, I forgot to introduce myself earlier. Assalamualaikum and hello, guys! My name is Nur Farhanim binti Baharudin, the one and only student in Unimas that holds 57214 as her matrix number. I come from Semporna, Sabah and as well as you guys, I am also a first year counseling student at age of 19.

As I have mentioned earlier, I was able to make so many new experiences by attending this course. All over these times, I always thought that being a counselor is super easy task especially when you are born with good communication skills. The truth is, it requires lots of reading and studies, continuous practices, able to understand the underlying message in clients’ stories, also being a good listener. According to what I learnt, counseling is not to solve other’s problem rather it is more to let people express their problem and share with someone before decide by their own with some guidance from counselor on how to fix or at least reduce the arising issues.

Honestly, I am very excited to undergo some series of counseling session very soon but I am a bit worry due to my bad attitude. I used to judge people based on my first impression and my first impressions on others are always negative. Due to that perception, I am now working hard to change the way I think about others and applying unconditional positive regard when dealing with some strangers. Yeah, guys! It is obviously the Person Centered Theory (PCT) approach.

As a normal human being, I also deserve to be a client to other counselor because I also face some issues in my life. If I were to be in that position, I would prefer if the counselor applies the Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). I am saying so because I have so many issues regarding on how I perceive the world. Some people even labeling me as an over thinker.

To sum up, I learn so many new things and information in this class. I finally realize just how important the theory is to counselor. Also, I am able to fix a bit on my misconception on counselor’s role. Last but not least, I want to thank Dr Fatahyah for being such lovely, understanding, and negotiateable educator along this one semester. Hopefully, I will be able to have another class with you for the upcoming semester.
Even though we address you as Dr "Far", you are always near to our heart.

I guess that’s all from me for this entry. Wait for my next entry about my experience in completing both individual and group assignments. Anyway, happy blogging, guys!

  2. You have always been funny and great in speaking which makes you entertaining, yet I did not expect that you can still be so entertaining through your journal! Stay cheerful! It makes you approachable and people would be more comfortable to talk to you.
