Basic Helping skills Class:)

Hi,my first class in Basic Helping skills was on 17/10/2016. Yes, I came to class late than others because I was a newly registered student at that time. Not as a second intake student but from another faculty. As I entered the class, I was a little bit nervous and scared because I don't know anyone in this class furthermore it was my first class anyway. As Dr. Fa entered the class , she was asking in that class what is the previous lecture was about? The class anwered "Helping skills in helping session". Then , she began to ask the students randomly what was the helping skills involved. All the students could answer it with easily plus with a short recap from Dr. Fa.  From there, I could learn a bit about the skills needed in helping session.

Then, Dr. Fa proceed the class with  another lectures that is ethics in helping skills, then model and theories. From this lectures, I was get to know that in order to conduct a helping session, we must follow the proper ethics. Somehow, my attention was attracted to the model and theories lecture. In this lecture we learned the DASIE  model that used to help helper to handle the helping session besides to managing problem. From this I wondered about myself if I can be a good helper to people and I really hope that this model can help me to handle the counselling session in future. At the same time I was also scared that I cannot be someone that can help people because in my thought not everyone can be a professional helper like counsellors.

"Can I really be a good helper?"

Besides that we also learnt  two theories in this class that is Person centered therapy and Cognitive Behavior theory. I was really attracted to these two theories. First is Cognitive Behavior therapy where it is about how our thought can really affect our emotion and behavior. From this, I can relate to my everyday situation. According to this theory, if we think about the situation in such unhelpful way, it really can affect our emotion and action. For example, thinking that our friend is mad with us just because they accidentally ignored us. If we think too negative about it, it will make us really uncomfortable and vice versa. This theory attract my attention because this is what I do sometimes. I am such a negative person sometimes. I always think that I am not capable in doing anything. However, learning this theory really makes me to open my mind that we should change our thought in order to change our behaviour in a positive way. The second theory is Person centered therapy where this theory stated that human is rational, good and capable in doing their responsibility. I found that this theory also good because it is a humanistic approach. From this theory , I learnt that everyone have their own tendency to be a good people no matter how bad they are. Also, this theory emphasizes empathy, congruence and respect into the relationship with helpee.

We really need skills in order to help a person. :)

To conclude, I learnt a lot from Basic Helping skills class even it was my first class that day. I am looking forward to learn more about helping skill and  really hope that I can practice it in my everyday life besides in helping people.

  1. Be brave to fail because with that we have a strength to wake up as a inspiration and be more confident with ourselves.
