My experiences during class

During the first day of class, I was not surprised that we had to do an ice breaking by introducing our names. What was surprising during this ice breaking session was that we had to mention our strength. That is an interesting fact to know in someone. It enables us to know what other people are good at and get to know what strengths and qualities that they have. When it comes to my turn, I shared about my strength on how optimistic and open-minded I am. Upon listening to other people’s strengths, I found out that we are all different and everyone has their own strengths. I was wondering how life is going to be like in university with these new coursemates of mine. It would be interesting to cooperate with them as they come from different backgrounds, different upbringing, different mindsets and different strengths. The lecturer emphasizes on our strength because that is what brings us forward and improve ourselves in becoming a better person for ourselves and for everyone else. Focusing on strengths alone can also build up our confidence and courage and that we are all good and special in our own ways. There is no use seeing and criticizing one’s weakness because that will not build up a good relationship between each other. We should not be judgmental because when we do, we would set a value on people which builds up a barrier between us and people. We would be ignorant with the judgments that we have made on people. Hence, we would not want to listen, understand and help them willingly. During another class, we had role play activities. I volunteered to become a client in the role play and the lecturer becomes the counselor. I was honored to have a hands-on experience with the lecturer. From that short role play, I have learned on what the counselors are supposed to do and say at the beginning of a counseling session. I have also learned to be calm and speak smoothly when our roles were switched. It was my first time knowing how to behave during a counseling session. It was really interesting and thrilling. I felt so fortunate to be able to grab this opportunity as the lecturer has guided me step by step. With hands-on experiences, knowledge on basic helping skills and good classmates, I am really looking forward to what this class has to offer. I feel excited to study this subject because the knowledge can be applied in our daily life and improve our communication skills to talk to other people in hopes that we could help them more effectively.
